Preserve the future of banking

Level the playing field for banks & credit unions

Oppose the expansion of credit union powers. CONTACT CONGRESS NOW.

Credit unions aren't playing by the same rules that govern banks. They are not required to

  • pay taxes,
  • take on community reinvestment responsibilities, or
  • abide by the same strict federal regulations as banks.

  • Fact Sheet

Congressional advocates for the credit union industry have reintroduced the Credit Union Regulatory Improvements Act (CURIA), legislation that will allow credit unions to stray even further from their mission of serving low – and moderate – income individuals, while also raising safety and soundness concerns.

The American Bankers Association (ABA) has prepared a letter that you can send to your Member of Congress voicing your opposition. There is no charge for you to participate in this letter writing campaign. Simply click the link on this FNBAlaska.com page to be taken to ABA's Web site. There, by entering your zip code, you'll be able to send a pre-written letter of opposition to your Member of Congress.

    Your involvement matters!

Leveling the playing field with credit unions will take long-term effort and the voice of voters nationwide. Oppose the expansion of credit union powers. Send a letter of opposition to your Member of Congress today!

Help keep banking and commerce separate

Another issue threatens to tilt the playing field. Federal law prohibits the mixing of banking and commerce. However, due to a loophole, commercial businesses can acquire industrial loan companies (ILCs), which offer many of the same services as commercial banks. The FDIC has placed a moratorium on the approval of deposit insurance for ILCs until January 2008. A bill now being considered in the U.S. Senate, S. 1356, would close the loophole. Click here to learn more about the issue and send a letter to Senators Stevens and Murkowski urging their support of the bill.
