Fraudsters hit debit card users

A counterfeit card fraud involving MasterCard debit cards targeted Alaskans today, prompting First National Bank Alaska to take immediate steps to protect its customers and the bank. To guard against counterfeit cards, First National is sending replacement cards to its cardholders whose cards may have been compromised. The fraud is in no way the result of a breach of information security at First National.

The fraud prompted the bank to shut down the pay-with-signature option on about 700 MasterCard debit cards, while still allowing those cards to be used with a Personal Identification Number (PIN), at a point-of-sale terminal or ATM.

"Unfortunately, criminals inconvenience all of us," said Vice President Valerie Bale, manager of the bank's electronic banking department. "Debit and credit card fraud is a major problem everywhere, for everyone. Protect your card by taking advantage of online access to review your statements frequently and, most importantly, guard your card and PIN information carefully."

First National customers are urged to contact their local First National branch if they have questions about their First National debit card or deposit account.
