First National profile: Haines Branch Manager Dick Flegel

Operating on a large scale in a small town

Dick Flegel refers to the Haines Branch as something of a social hub in the small, close- knit community. Works by local artists even hang on the walls in a display that changes regularly. "Our customers are our neighbors," Flegel said. "We genuinely care about them, and that shows in our high level of customer service." Flegel has managed the Haines Branch for more than 30 years, and has worked in the community through the Haines Chamber of Commerce, the local school district, and many other activities. His personal involvement in the community has helped strengthen his relationships with many First National customers, including Darsie Culbeck of Alaska Mountain Guides. Flegel and his staff are able to meet Culbeck's needs even when he is thousands of miles away, demonstrating the value of a strong banker-customer relationship. "Our main focus is to know our customers, because that helps us give them what they need," Flegel said. "And when a customer has a need that we can't meet at that particular time, we always make sure we find another way we can help them."
