The law's on his side

Todd Heverling said even as he was attending law school in the late 1980s, he wasn’t sure he was going to practice law.

But he knew it was going to help him out.

Heverling, who was born and raised in Alaska, had a background in tourism, and was a born salesman. After a few years doing freelance legal work, he decided it was time to find out what he was best suited to do.

“That’s how I kind of backed into banking,” said Heverling.

He started his banking career in 1994 working in audit and compliance. He said when he came to First National two years later to work in the newly formed cash management services unit, it became clear he had found his niche.

“I have always liked sales and I am a real people person,” he said. “The job was a perfect fit.”

His background in customer service and sales plus a dedication to pleasing his customers has made Heverling successful the past 10 years.

“Selling bank services isn’t that hard,” he said. “As long as you are doing your best to meet customers’ needs, you’re on the right track. When they are successful, you are successful.”

And Heverling says being able to read and understand contracts like a lawyer doesn’t hurt. “It’s just one more tool I have to do my job well,” he said.

Heverling enjoys the diverse groups of people he meets through his job. But he also values the free time he gets to spend with his family, fishing or playing softball.
