Alaska Oral & Facial Cosmetic Surgery
Knowing the Drill
A born-and-raised Californian who attended medical school and oral and maxillofacial surgery residency in “The Sunshine State”, Dr. Bradley Szutz has always loved sunshine and warm weather. So when the opportunity arose to practice oral surgery in Alaska, a state where the sun doesn’t shine much for half the year and the weather isn’t particularly temperate, Szutz originally scoffed at the idea.
“I remember thinking, ‘Why the heck would I live in Alaska?’” said Szutz.
Now, as owner of Alaska Oral and Facial Cosmetic Surgery, Szutz couldn’t see himself anywhere else.
The right fit
Alaska Oral and Facial Cosmetic Surgery has been a mainstay in Anchorage since the 1980s. Their qualified team offers a wide array of services ranging from wisdom tooth removal and dental implant surgery to corrective jaw surgery and facial cosmetics.
Szutz joined the practice in 2013 and had big plans for the future, hoping to one day become the owner of the practice. But when a partner unexpectedly retired shortly after he came onboard, Szutz had the opportunity to make his dreams a reality. There was much that had to be done in order for Szutz to take on sole ownership.
He scouted the market, trying to find a financial institution who believed in him and his drive.
“I talked to a couple other banks, but couldn’t find the right fit,” said Szutz.
Making dreams come true
Eventually, Szutz met for dinner with First National Bank Alaska Loan Officer Tim Breeden. Together, Breeden and Szutz developed an in-depth plan for the practice, charting a path to success in Alaska’s sometimes volatile economy.
“A lot of potential customers come to me knowing their professional specialty well. My job is to find out if they know how to run a successful business,” said Breeden. “Brad was articulate and had a vision for where he wanted the practice to go.”
Breeden and other experts at First National quickly got moving on a plan for Szutz. Soon after dinner, Szutz’s loan was approved and his oncedistant dream had come to life.
“The relationship that Tim and I have really helped during the process,” said Szutz. “First National understood my business during a tough time of transition, and it’s worked out well for the both of us ever since.”'
Not a want, but a need
Today, Szutz and his five-person team use a number of First National’s services to help their business succeed.
“The bank helps with our deposits, cash management, corporate cards and more,” said Szutz. “I don’t think anyone else could meet our needs like First National.”
Among the many First National services Alaska Oral and Facial Cosmetic Surgery uses every day, Szutz’s favorite is the bank’s corporate cards.
“I buy just about everything on my corporate credit card,” said Szutz.
Running an oral surgery practice can be expensive. The day-to-day costs of equipment, maintenance and medication can really add up for a locally owned and operated small business.
“We circulate a fair amount of money, and First National has been able to help us with it all,” said Szutz.
Expand, renovate, renew
Throughout the next few years, Szutz hopes to add more patients, staff members and doctors to the group.
“I’m looking forward to expanding, renovating and renewing my business,” said Szutz. “I’m excited for what’s on the horizon for Alaska Oral and Facial Cosmetic Surgery, and I know that First National is with me to help every step of the way.”
