Bernie's Pharmacy

Taking Care

Bernie's pharmacy benefits alaskans with help from first national

In 1980, fifth-generation Alaskan Bernie Klouda opened the doors to Bernie’s Pharmacy with little more than a small loan from his parents and an unwavering dedication to taking care of others.

“For as long as I knew him, Bernie had a saying, ‘Take care of the patient first and the rest will follow,’” said James Manners, General Manager of Bernie’s Pharmacy.

Today, nearly 40 years since its inception and after Klouda’s death in 2015, Bernie’s Pharmacy stands strong. Led by Klouda’s wife, Teresa Hall- Klouda, Bernie’s Pharmacy carries on Klouda’s legacy every day, taking care of Alaskans as the last independent community pharmacy in Anchorage.

Bernie's Pharmacy

People first

Bernie’s Pharmacy takes care of all Alaskans (even animals) by offering a range of pharmaceutical specialties from standard immunizations and prescriptions to complex specialties like compounding, or creating specific medications tailored to an individual patient’s needs.

Above all, what sets Bernie’s Pharmacy apart is their unwavering focus on customer service. Time and time again, Hall-Klouda and Manners have helped patients even when it would sometimes lead to less profit for the pharmacy. But it’s these patients, they say, who not only come back to fill their next prescription, but who tell their friends and family to come in as well.

Bernie’s doesn’t just take care of Alaskans in the pharmacy. After Klouda passed away in 2015, Hall-Klouda and her pharmaceutical colleagues wished to start a scholarship for pharmacy students to honor his legacy. These good intentions combined with Hall-Klouda’s drive to give back led to the Klouda Classic Golf Tournament, an annual event in Anchorage where golfers tee off for a good cause.

“We take care of the community by giving back,” said Hall-Klouda. “The biggest way we give back is with the golf tournament.”

Since it began, the Klouda Classic has raised more than $100,000 for local pharmacy students and is heading towards its fifth year in 2020. When it was time for Hall-Klouda to find the right financial institution to effectively manage the scholarship funds, she knew where to go.

Wealth of knowledge

First National and Bernie’s Pharmacy have a long-rooted history, starting in the 1940s with Bernie’s parents, who owned several drugstores in Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley.

When Klouda wanted to open his pharmacy almost 40 years ago, he knew he could trust First National. Today, the relationship remains strong.

“I have a team of First National bankers who support me,” said Hall-Klouda. “If I have a question, I can call and someone can immediately help.”

First National administers the pharmacy’s accounts and payroll. Now, the bank’s experienced Wealth Management department provides a full range of investment management services to meet Hall-Klouda’s needs.

“Their wealth of knowledge has certainly been very helpful for me,” said Hall-Klouda.

Local. Independent. Alaskan.

Many things have changed since 1980. Customers have come and gone, and other local pharmacies have shut their doors. But Bernie’s Pharmacy has held strong through it all, firmly believing that by creating a happy place for customers and employees alike, they would succeed.

“We take care of people here. That’s what sets us apart; it’s the personal touch,” said Hall-Klouda. “Our motto is ‘Local. Independent. Alaskan.’ If we could put a big ‘Alaska Grown’ sweater on the store, we would.”

Bernie’s Pharmacy hopes to keep on providing Alaskans their trademark customer service for years to come.“We’ve been here for a long time,” said Manners. “And we’re willing to make the investment to prove that we’re not going anywhere.”

Local Knowledge, Experience You Can Trust

For nearly a century, Alaskans have counted on First National Bank Alaska for local expertise, quick decision-making, institutional safety and fiduciary responsibility.

While much of that sterling reputation was earned by meeting the everyday banking needs of its personal and business clients, the bank also remains steadfast in its commitment to financial planning and investment management.

It’s never too early – or too late – to start planning ahead. First National’s Wealth Management team is always ready to leverage their local investing and trust management knowledge to benefit your financial future. These local experts strive every day to bring Alaskans like you a full spectrum of services to help effectively manage your investable assets to meet your short- and long-term goals.

“Our team’s diverse experiences in finance, customer service and our individual roles directly benefit our clients’ success,” said Senior Wealth Management Officer Matt Tanner.

That’s why Teresa Hall-Klouda of Bernie’s Pharmacy came to First National when it was time to grow her scholarship foundation. Tanner and Wealth Management Business Support Manager Kara Blake offered Teresa a clear, consultative approach to identify her goals and how First National could help her achieve them.

“Because of Teresa’s success, a more defined plan was needed to positively manage her growth,” said Tanner. “Throughout the course of several meetings and discussions, Kara and I were able to recommend a strategy that worked for Teresa.”

The Wealth Management Department at First National offers a full range of trust and investment services for local businesses, non-profit corporations, Native Corporations and government entities, as well as for individuals and families.
