According to the FBI, Alaskans lost more than $10 million to tech support, government impersonation, investment, and romance scams in 2024. (Source: FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) 2024 Annual Report)
Alaska businesses lost more than $4 million to business email compromise (BEC) – a type of fraud where scammers impersonate someone familiar to the recipient via email, text or phone call to steal account information, gain unauthorized access to networks, or solicit payment using fake invoices.
How to protect yourself and your business
- Be wary of any request to change a payment.
- Verify requests directly with vendors or employees by calling legitimate numbers to confirm the details (i.e., not by clicking links in emails or calling numbers provided in change requests).
- Treat abnormal or urgent requests as suspicious, especially if received by email or text.
- Notify your bank immediately if you become a victim of theft or fraud.
