Alaska flags donated to troops

Although some Alaska National Guard members cannot be home in Alaska for the holidays, First National Bank Alaska is sending part of the state to those men and women.

First National donated 200 Alaska flags to the Veteran of Foreign Wars Adopt-A-Unit program to give to guard members stationed oversees. The first of the flags were slated to go to members of B Company, 207th Aviation Regiment, stationed in Iraq. Mary Souviney, post commander of VFW 10252, accepted the flags today.

Marty Miller, Assistant Vice President of the bank and former head of the Alaska Department of the VFW, said when he heard that service men and women were requesting flags, he knew the bank could help.

These flags represent our state, said Miller. Knowing that we are doing something to help the troops feel a little more at home makes this a very special donation.

Miller was joined by bank president D.H. Cuddy and Senior Vice President David Stringer to present the donation, which comes fittingly the day before Veterans Day. Its just one way First National shows its commitment to these brave men and women, Miller said.

First National donated more than $8,500 to military service organizations in 2004 such as the VFW, Disabled American Veterans and Armed Forces YMCA.
