Barrett welcomed to Board of Directors

Alyeska Pipeline Service Company President Adm. Tom Barrett, USCG (ret.) joined First National Bank Alaska’s Board of Directors, the bank recently announced.

As president of the pipeline service company, Barrett focuses on building a high performance culture at Alyeska. The company strives to provide safe, environmentally responsible, reliable and cost-effective oil pipeline transportation from Alaska’s North Slope.

He previously served as Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Dept. of Transportation and the first Administrator of the U.S. Pipeline Hazardous Material Safety Administration (PHMSA), directing the agency’s national safety programs for hazardous materials and liquid, natural gas, petroleum, and other hazardous liquid pipelines. Prior to that, Barrett served 35 years in the U.S. Coast Guard where he commanded Coast Guard operations in Alaska and the North Pacific from 1999 to 2002. Other Alaska tours included Kodiak and Juneau.

“Tom Barrett knows Alaska and understands the challenges we face in our natural-resource-based economy,” First National President Betsy Lawer said. “His expertise in the oil and gas sector as well as his leadership experience will help the bank’s management team continue to do what’s right for First National and our state.”

Barrett earned a B.S. in Biology from LeMoyne College, Syracuse, N.Y. and a Juris Doctor with honors from the George Washington University. He is a Vietnam veteran. His wife Sheila is a former school teacher who taught in Kodiak and Juneau, as well as in other states.

“First National Bank Alaska has an amazing legacy of family and institutional commitment to Alaska communities and Alaskans,” said Barrett. “Betsy Lawer’s leadership is respected across the state and I am honored to associate with Betsy and First National Bank Alaska.”

Joining Barrett on the board are Lawer, Fran Ulmer, Dr. Maurice Coyle, Perry Eaton, Margy Johnson, Jane Klopfer, Loren H. Lounsbury and Lucy Mahan.
