First National Bowl expands, new trophy delivered to ASAA

A new division of Alaska high school football means a new First National Bowl trophy will be awarded to a champion.

Homer, Juneau's Thunder Mountain, Kenai and Soldotna will compete in the medium-school semifinals this weekend. The winners will advance to the Oct. 15 First National Bowl at Tom Huffer Sr. Stadium in Chugiak. The medium-school division is Alaska's third and consists of schools with enrollment size of 326 to 800 students.

First National Bank Alaska Vice President Jay Page recently delivered the new medium-school First National Bowl trophy to the Alaska School Activities Association (ASAA) office. The trophy features a polished wooden base and is affixed on top with a large, gold-colored football. It joins trophies previously provided by the bank for both the small-school (enrollment of 325 or fewer) and large-school (801-plus) divisions.

"The creation of the medium-school football division demonstrates the growth of Alaska interscholastic activities," Page said. "Playing a role in that growth continues to be a great source of pride for First National Bank Alaska and its 700 Alaska employees."

ASAA is the non-profit organization responsible for the state's interscholastic activities. First National's ASAA title sponsorship dates back to 1990, less than two years after the State of Alaska stopped funding the association. The bank recently renewed the sponsorship for another three school years, including the current one.

Over the last 21 years, the bank's monetary support alone has totaled more than $1 million for student activities and championship events.
