Food Bank receives financial boost

First National Bank Alaskas Valdez Branch recently made a much-needed donation to the Emergency Assistance and Food Bank of Valdez.

Branch Manager Will Stark presented a $1,000 check to the group to help pay for food that will be distributed throughout the community.

Lucy Lang, president of the food banks board, said the organization provides more than 6,000 meals each year. With food distribution twice each week, the donation was sorely needed.

We have a lot of seasonal workers who need food in the winter, Lang said. We also help with heating bills for a lot of families. The banks donation couldnt have come at a better time.

Lang said the program is funded each year by a grant from the Valdez United Way chapter. That pays a lot of the expenses, but there is always a need for more, she said.

This is a way to help a lot of people in this town, said First Nationals Valdez Branch Manager Will Stark.

Established in 1922, First National is Alaskas largest locally owned and operated bank, with ATMs and 28 branches in 16 communities throughout Alaska. First National has operated its Valdez branch since 1970.
